House Protects "Indian Givers" with Finance Bill

After sixteen hours of debate, the House passed its controversial Shays-Meehan bill to overhaul campaign finance laws.  But FRC has its own misgivings about the bill, primarily because of its restrictions on free speech and suspicions about the Shays-Meehan sponsors.  Their home states -- Arizona, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Connecticut -- have something in common.  All four have large Native American populations, and those reservations are home to lucrative casinos.  In the last election cycle, over a million dollars in gambling money was contributed to political parties and campaigns by Native American tribes -- second only to the National Rifle Association.  Shays-Meehan would exempt Indian groups from the restrictions on "soft money" contributions.  In other words, the men at the forefront of this bill are protecting their own major donors while they hypocritically tout the evils of our present system.  Meanwhile, the bill impinges on the very heart of our First Amendment rights and groups like FRC.  Join us in urging the Senate to carefully weigh the consequences of Shays-Meehan.
